The following text I read on a board at the way to the statue:
| Short Introduction to the Spot of the Five Goats |
| The Spot of Five Goats is a small garden with an area of 1300 square meters. The famous sculpture of the Five Goats, 10 meters high, was built in 1959. It has been regarded as the symbol of Guangzhou. The sculpture originates from a beautiful legend: In ancient times, this area bordered the sea and the people lived by fishing. One day, five supernatural beings in colorful clothes descended here from heaven. They rode five goats, each goat holding a mouthful of rice ears. They presented the rice ears to the local people, taught them how to grow rice and wished them free from famine forever. After that, they flew away to the skies, leaving behind the five goats, which soon turned to stone. So now Guangzhou is also called the "Goat City" or the "City of Rice-ears". |
