First built in 537 AD and originally called the Sarira Pagoda in Jewelry Adorned Temple, Liu Rong (literally six banyan trees) Flowery Pagoda boasts of a history of over 1460 years. It was destroyed by fire in the early Song Dynasty and was rebuilt in the fourth year of the Shao Sheng Period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1097 AD). As a thousand Buddha images were enshrined inside the pagoda, it was called One Thousand Buddha Pagoda. Because of the colourful walls and tiles it has also been given the name Flowery Pagoda since the Qing Dynasty. The pagoda is 57 meters high, octagon shaped, with nine storeys outgide and seventeen storeys outside. In June 1989, it was designated as a Protected Provincial Cultural Relict. In 1999 cracks appeared in the body of the pagoda. After a detailed survey and study, experts came up with a maintenance and reinforcement plan. The restaration project started in June 2000 and was completed in September 2001. The treasurod pagoda has once again been restored to its original splendour, and the Buddha lights illuminate the whole world. May tourists from all over the world live a happy, peaceful, bealthy, and auspicious life.
